Stript vs. anymize.ai: on-device app or cloud service?

The short version: anymize.ai is a cloud web application; your document is uploaded and processed on anymize.ai’s servers (hosted at Hetzner in Germany). Stript is a desktop application; detection and anonymization run on your own computer and the document content never leaves it. Both products replace personal data with placeholders before you use an AI tool and restore it afterwards. The architectural difference is what decides which one fits your requirements.

The core difference: where does your document go?
- anymize.ai describes itself as a web application with API access. Documents are processed “exclusively in ISO 27001-certified data centers in Germany” (Hetzner, Falkenstein and Nuremberg). anymize.ai states that documents are processed in memory, originals are not stored, and only hash mappings for later restoration are retained. An on-premise deployment exists at the Enterprise level.
- Stript runs on your Mac or Windows PC. There is no upload: the AI models run locally, and you can verify in your network traffic that no document content is transmitted, to us or anyone. Here is how to check it yourself.
Both are legitimate architectures; they answer different questions. German hosting answers “where is the server?”. On-device answers “why is there a server at all?”. If your document is uploaded, a processing relationship with the provider arises that you have to document and secure (anymize.ai accordingly offers a DPA that applies with acceptance of its terms). What each product is
- anymize.ai positions itself as an AI workplace: chat access to GPT, Claude, Gemini, and Mistral plus its own models, with anonymization as the protective layer in front of them, alongside features like transcription and image generation. It detects over 40 categories of sensitive data, per its site.
- Stript is a focused anonymization tool: detect, review, anonymize, use any AI tool you already have, restore. It works with PDF, Word, email including attachments, scans (on-device OCR), and plain text, in German and English, and exports format-preserving Word/PDF files.

Where anymize.ai may fit better
Fairness first: if you want a hosted all-in-one AI workspace for a team, with chat access to several commercial models behind one anonymization layer, and uploading documents to a German-hosted provider (with a DPA) is acceptable under your policies, anymize.ai is built for exactly that. It also runs in the browser with nothing to install.
Where Stript fits better
If your requirement is that client, patient, or employee documents must not leave the device at all, a cloud service cannot meet it by design, regardless of hosting location. That requirement is common in law firms (professional secrecy), healthcare, and organizations whose DPO wants to avoid another processing relationship for sensitive content. Bottom line
Choose by requirement, not by label. If “GDPR-compliant, hosted in Germany” is sufficient for your documents, anymize.ai is a capable cloud option. If your standard is “the document never leaves the machine, verifiably,” that is the property Stript exists for, and the one no cloud service can offer.
